Kuopio is an Eastern Finnish city in the middle of the most beautiful Lake Finland. The area of the city of Kuopio has about 120,000 inhabitants and the area of North Savo has about 250,000 inhabitants. Jätekukko Ltd is responsible for regional waste management, which collects both mixed waste and biowaste. Mixed waste is used for heat production, separately collected biowaste goes to biogas production for Gasum Oy. Jätekukko Ldt’s operations began in 2001, separate collection of Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) has been in operation since 2003. Today, almost all collected waste fractions end up either in energy production, biogas production or are recycled for reuse.
