Bergen is a world heritage city nestled between seven mountains in Western Norway. The waste management company BIR is responsible for waste handling in Bergen and its six surrounding municipalities, serving over 350,000 inhabitants. BIR has been collecting commercial food waste separately since the 1970s, and has started food waste collection from households. Currently, biowaste is converted into compost and biogas outside the Bergen region, but BIR aims for regional and circular utilisation.
