Albano is a town of 41,000 people nestled in the Alban hills – a dormant volcanic range 20km south–east of Rome. The municipality has shown great sensitivity on the issues of waste management and sustainability, starting separate collection in 2013 and bringing down the annual per capita cost of waste to about €154, making Albano one of the best performing towns in the Castelli Romani Region. Door-to-door separate collection has been extended to the entire territory and the introduction of punctual pricing have made it possible to exceed 80% separate collection. Both the municipal administration and the company responsible for waste management (Volsca Ambiente) demonstrate that they know how to combine cost with efficiency with their waste sorting service.
