Saaremaa is the largest local government in Estonia by area and has one city (Kuressaare), 9 settlements and 427 villages. It is located on the island of Saaremaa and also includes the small island of Abruka. There is both air and ferry connection to the island. Since 2023, all households and businesses are strictly obliged to transfer biowaste for recycling through a door-to-door system or organize recycling at the place of generation. For obvious reasons, the separate collection system does not work 100%. There is currently no capacity for recycling biowaste in the local municipality. Today, we are looking for solutions for our region so that the system works optimally, efficiently and with a future perspective.
