The Municipality of Valongo has been working with the objective of increasing the collection of recyclable materials and thus meeting the goals established in the National Policy on waste “Reciclar é Dar +” (Recycling is Giving +) is the motto of the awareness-raising action that supports the implementation of door-to-door selective collection circuits, in specific areas of the municipalities covered by LIPOR - Intermunicipal Waste Management Service of Greater Porto. The collection of recoverable waste – paper and cardboard, plastic and metal, glass, food scraps, as well as garbage, is, in these places, carried out door-to-door, according to differentiated containerization and defined periodicity. That is, each waste stream has a corresponding container and a specific day for its collection, according to the predefined weekly schedule. The Municipality of Valongo, with the support of the company providing services for the collection and transport of urban waste in the municipality, and later also with the support of LIPOR, implemented the pilot project of door-to-door selective collection. Currently this project is implemented in all the parishes of Alfena, Valongo and Ermesinde (leaving here a small area of tall buildings), as well as in some areas of the parish of Campo and Sobrado. In the same diploma (RGR) it is determined by paragraph 1 of article 30 that food waste (organic waste) must be separated at source and separately collected by December 31, 2023, which was complied with in the municipality. Thus, in perfect harmony with the above, in February 2018, the Municipality of Valongo, in a pioneering project at a national level, began the collection of food waste in homes and multifamily buildings.
